University students will have free internet on and off campus says Max Price

The Fees Must Fall protests in late 2015 -2016 forced many students to remain off campus and struggling to access study materials to finishing their courses within the set duration.

UCT vice-chancellor, Dr Max Price says they found it hard to get students access to the education content online when they couldn't get to campus because of the protests.

Price says he approached the three network providers in the country and asked them to step in and assist the students.

Vodacom heeded this call and has made available a free internet service for its users at universities across South Africa.

The cellular company says it has already enabled its subscribers at 19 of the 23 South African universities with free internet access.

Today at university or in many situations you really need that access whether you are doing your research, accessing library material, which you do online or just mainly communicating with other students and lecturers.

Max Price, UCT vice-chancellor

So I approached the three network providers and Vodacom has responded first and very enthusiastically. They have provided the service not just to UCT but to all Universities.

Max Price, UCT vice-chancellor

Price says Vodacom is not just providing the service in times of crisis but this is a permanent way of reducing the cost of higher education for students.
