Cash-in-transit heists escalating in SA says expert

Head of Violent Crimes at South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric), Kevin Twiname says the cash-in-transit industry is concerned about the increase in cash-in-transit heists.

The latest is the bombing of a cash-in-transit van on the N1 highway at the Buccleuch interchange in Johannesburg, where criminals made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Twiname says they are working closely with the South African police and hope that the perpetrators of this crimes will be brought to book soon.

It is quiet obvious that organised crimes syndicate are operating in this space where cash-in-transit vehicles are attacked while on the road.

Looking at how organised these crimes are, there's a whole host of allegations about internal collusions. But the fact of the matter is that this is organised crime and intelligence has to be gathered.

This incidents are extremely traumatic to the drivers and personnel looking after the money, says Twiname.

Restricting the movement of cash will inconvenience the public, he adds.

Twiname calls for the members of the public who have information regarding the cash-in-transit heists to come forward.
