Masterclass: Social media (do's and don'ts)

Emma Sadleir is a speaker, author and legal consultant and social media expert.

Chatting to 702 host, Azania Mosaka, Sadleir says social media can be extremely dangerous. She adds that the biggest challenge comes with looking after one's own reputation. She goes on to say everyone is a celebrity in the digital age.

We have this online presence that comes with us wherever we go.

Emma Sadleir, speaker, author and legal consultant and social media expert.

We treat content on social media the same way we treat content published in the media and front page of newspapers explains Sadlier.

As one other person has seen that content it is regarded as a 'publication', she explains.

She says an individual's right to freedom of expression can be limited when it comes into conflict with other people's right. She uses an employment contract as an example, explaining that your work contract requires you to act in the best interests of your company - meaning you cannot say what you may wish to say if it will dent the reputation of your employer.

Sadleir says disclaimers on personal social media accounts are not magic wands that will absolve you from any liability and provides no protection whatsoever.

You are who you are in the real world when you go online.

Emma Sadleir, speaker, author and legal consultant and social media expert.

As a rule of thumb, if you cannot it up on a billboard then don't say it.
