[LISTEN] City Parks update as bird flu hits Joburg zoos

Residents in the Johannesburg area have been concerned about Avian flu that has since hit the area.

Almost 600 birds have been culled in the past month across the city.

City Parks spokesperson, Jenny Moodley says the Avian flu strain that has hit Johannesburg is not contagious to humans.

She says the flu has affected areas like Joburg Zoo‚ Westdene Dam‚ Emmarentia Dam and Zoo Lake.

We have lost our blue crane which is part of our vulnerable species at the Joburg Zoo and 581 carcasses across the city including the zoo.

Jenny Moodley, City Parks spokesperson

Moodley says they do not see the need to close the zoos at the moment. Birds that are vulnerable are in protected enclosures where vets are keeping a close eye.

Anybody entering the Zoo is advised to use the disinfectants at the exits.

Jenny Moodley, City Parks spokesperson

We ask our residents not to make contact with the birds or handling dead ones. Do not attempt to feed wild birds or resuscitate sick birds...
