Red Cross Hospital's RX Radio gives voice to sick kids

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital has played an important role in improving the health and lifting the spirits of ill children across Cape Town.

Over 1 178 staff members are devoted to working with young patients at the he 61-year-old hospital, explains CEO Dr Matodzi Mukosi.

Pippa Hudson and her team hosted a live broadcast from the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital at their own in-house radio station, Rx Radio.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital launched Rx Radio, one of the first children’s hospital radio stations in Africa.

Pediatrician and station manager Dr Gabriel Urgotti explains that Rx Radio involves child patients as producers, reporters, and presenters on various shows.

We thought it was a great idea to provide a platform for children in hospitals to talk about their illnesses and experiences of being sick.

It's radio by children, for children. It's mainly the children the with chronic illness that are producing and broadcasting.

Dr Urgotti says that Rx Radio helps build an intergenerational dialogue between the parents, children and health workers.

Rx Radio senior producer Noluyulo Ngomani explains that the children are taught life skills and technical skills to help them share their stories.

CEO Mukosi says the hospital has gained a reputation for outstanding care and medical achievements such as the separation of conjoined twins and renal and liver surgeries.

When you talk childcare, people think of Red Cross.

The hospitals sees over 160 000 outpatient visits, 25 000 hospital admissions and as many as 7 500 operations annually.

Mukosi also explains that the hospital is the only one to have a specialised burn unit for children in South Africa.
