My father was unconditional in his love - Dali Tambo

To mark what would have been the 100th birthday of struggle stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo, the South African Reserve Bank unveiled four commemorative coins about the life and achievements of the iconic leader on 4 October.

The commemoration event was hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni and the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation.

Dali Tambo, OR Tambo's son and former host of "People Of The South" spoke to 702 Afternoon Drive host Bongani Bingwa.

Tambo says as a family, they've had a longstanding relationship with the City of Ekurhuleni because that's where the family lived before going into exile.

Yesterday was very special. The whole year has been amazing.

Tambo says his father was quite humble and would have probably suggested a fellow liberation icon be commemorated.

My father was strict and a disciplinarian. He wanted honesty, appropriate behaviour and manners. He was unconditional in his love.

As a father, he was very gentle, when you were with him, you felt very special says Tambo.

He goes on to say that his father would have been proud of the progress made by the African National Congress but also require more work from everyone to fulfil the dream and bring, dignity and freedom to the people.

He'd say congratulations comrades but we need to still work harder and shine for our people.
