Sascoc supplier allegedly paid for Mbalula's R680k trip to Dubai

An anonymous tip to EWN has revealed that the former Minister of Sports, Fikile Mbalula, had his holiday trip to Dubai paid for by one of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) suppliers.

According to EWN senior reporter Barry Bateman, the investigation suggests that Sedgars Sports sponsored at least part of the Mbalulas’ getaway in late 2016, by channeling money through an apparently inactive company called Reimon Uniforms.

It has been established that the Mbalula's family trip cost around R680 000 for him, his wife and their three children. Sedgars allegedly paid at least R300, 000, however, EWN doesn't have the records of the outstanding amount, which could've been paid in cash to the travel agency.

What we are establishing is that Reimon Uniforms is like a dormant company, but it facilitates payments from a company called Sedgars Sports which is a Sascoc supplier.

A family holiday paid for by Sascoc supplier at the very least represents a conflict of interest.

The Minister says he will not entertain any questions about this, he was on a family holiday, Sedgars Sports has denied paying for this trip. He says 'this has nothing to do with you, you are invading my privacy...'

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

Mbalula had said there is no breach of code of ethics but EWN is yet to find out if this amount was declared in terms of the Parliament's ethics code, says Bateman.

He cannot hide behind privacy. The Minister is a public official and is accountable to the public ... he should just come clean and let the public know.
