Section 27's Nomatter Ndebele says Gauteng Health lax in dealing with families of 110 psychiatric patients who died last year.

Section 27 has accused the Department of Health of being slow in it's handling of a dispute resolution process between the State and the families of victims in the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

At least 110 psychiatric patients died between March and December last year after department terminated its contract with the healthcare group.

The arbitration process between the State and the victims' families has begun.

Ray White spoke to Section 27's Nomatter Ndebele.

We arrived this morning and it was an absolute shambles. When we started, we only got the list of witnesses that was supposed to have been furnished to all parties by the 27th of September and that didn't happen.

Nomatter Ndebele, Communications Officer at Section27

It begs the question - what are they actually doing when they are supposed to be preparing for this?

Nomatter Ndebele, Communications Officer at Section27

Lawyers are calling for former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to be subpoenaed to testify.

The interesting thing is that the government furnished a list of witnesses of people who were not at all involved in the moving of the patients.

Nomatter Ndebele, Communications Officer at Section27

She says the families are simply looking for closure.

Countless times the families have said we want to hear from her and we want to know what happened.
