Mbalula's history with Sedgars dates back at least a decade - EWN reporter

EWN's Barry Bateman reveals how a sporting goods supplier, Sedgars Sports allegedly funded Mbalula's trip to Dubai.

On Monday morning, Eyewitness News revealed an investigation has established that a sporting goods supplier, Sedgars Sports, allegedly paid at least R300 000 – and possibly as much as R680 000 – for a trip to Dubai by Minister Fikile Mbalula and his family last year.

EWN senior reporter, Barry Bateman says Sedgars Sports denied having paid for half of the trip.

While working on the investigation, Bateman adds that Sedgars Sports technically didn't actually pay the money but was funded by a company called Reimon Uniform.

But I've managed to establish that Reimon Uniform is a shelf company and its account is used by Sedgars to facilitate funds to some entities.

Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter

Bateman says this has become an issue because Sedgars supplies clothing to South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) for Team South Africa.

I'm not interested in what he did in Dubai - the issue here is the funding - and on the face of it, Sedgar Sports as confirmed by Sascoc is a supplier to team South Africa. They provided some of the clothing to Team South Africa for their Rio Olympics kit.

Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter

Their history of dealings with the sports ministry dates back to at least a decade says Bateman.

When it comes out that a supplier to Sascoc of clothing to team South Africa has funded the sports ministers holiday then there's certainly questions to be answered.

Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter

Bateman goes on to say Mbalula has hidden behind the claim of privacy, claiming there is no need to provide any explanation because it was a private holiday.
