Educational programmes help inmates integrate back into society

This year saw a 63.5 % increase of inmates sitting to write their matric exams. Marion Johnson, Director for Skills Development at Correctional Services says that is an important part of the an offenders rehabilitation.

She adds that this also contributes towards offenders being reintegrated into society and help them find work once they are released.

The department makes it compulsory for inmates who have not gotten a grade 9 to get schooling, to give inmates more opportunistic for their future.

It is compulsory for them to complete at least a grade 9 education. This gives them access to entering the grade 10 11 and 12 mainstream education. Also avaible is the TVET College programmers.

Johnson says that the subjects that inmates that can apply for depend on availability of educators who can teach those subjects.

These can range from maths, business and engineering.
