SABC 8's claims of 'secret' meeting dismissed by Presidency

The Presidency has dismissed claims by the group of journalists who call themselves the SABC 8. The group states that spokesperson Bongani Nqulunga had a 'secret' meeting with national TV news editor Nyana Molete, as well as SABC's acting group executive for news Kenneth Makatees.

In an open letter, the SABC 8 raise concern over what they say is a "takeover" of the public broadcaster.

The Presidency responded in a statement on Tuesday, saying the meeting was to provide information about the broadcaster's day to day functions, as it does with other media institutions.

Nqulunga confirmed the meeting took place and that there was nothing untoward about it.

We were surprised by this. Does it mean that we shouldn't meet with SABC journalists or journalists generally?

Bongani Nqulunga, spokesperson for The Presidency

I meet with many editors with journalists, for whole variety of reasons so it is not unusual for the President's spokesperson to speak with editors in or outside the office.
