Meet Solly Kramer, Chairperson of 3rd-gen family business Norman Goodfellows

We’ve been going for 42 years. We’ve never had a month-on-month where we haven’t grown in double-digit figures.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

The wine people sit in Cape Town, and they don’t really understand the emerging, main market.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

Norman Goodfellows is a well-established fine wine and spirit chain-store.

It is a third generation business founded by Norman Goodfellows CEO Solly Kramer’s father, Norman Kramer, way back in 1976.

My father was a genius at branding, and his wife designed the figure in the logo.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

“Norman” was the name of Solly’s grandfather while “Goodfellows” suggests good times.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Kramer for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

People often taste by price…

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

My father used to sleep there… he worked 22 hours a day and hardly ever came home.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

My father said, ‘Try and own your own business’.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

In those days the retail liquor trade was very Jewish dominated… My father wanted something different…

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

We try and maintain that type of personal service.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

We used to get orders from all over the country.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

Our growth in Cape Town is remarkable.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

Whiskey sales are down, but brandy is coming back.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

Vodka is strong, but it’s not growing.

Solly Kramer, Norman Goodfellows

Wine is the only category that isn’t thriving. And we’re a wine producing country!
