Motsoaledi: King Edward Hospital hardest hit by KZN storm

The National Healh Department has assessed the damage caused by severe thunderstorms in Kwazulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Two two patients were killed at a state hospital when a wall collapsed due to heavy rains, bringing the confirmed number of deaths to seven.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the deteriorating state of the King Edward hospital in Durban is part of the reason why it was so badly affected by the storms this week.

It is a very old hospital, so obviously when it gets affected by storms it gets very bad.

Aaron Motsoaledi, health minister

He says there have engaged Treasury about dipping into the PIC for assistance, to rebuild the hospital.

The building of new academic hospitals, King Edward especially....has been in the pipeline for a long time. We have been in discussion with the PIC, with Treasury. And Cosatu once issued a statement that they have got no problems with the PIC being used to improve public health infrastructure.
