Will City of Ekurhuleni be declared a disaster area after storm?

344 RDP houses were damaged as well as 279 shacks blown away by heavy winds this week.

Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Mzwandile Masina says officials are looking to rebuild following the extensive damage caused to RDP houses and shacks during a hail storm in the area on Monday.

344 RDP houses were damaged, as well as 299 structures blown away by heavy winds.

He says there is concern over the quality of houses built.

We think that there might be some quality issues that will need to be raised...

Mzwandile Masina, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni

Masina says assessments will determine whether the region should be declared a disaster area.

On the basis of the report that we will receive in a day or so, we will be able to go to the provincial government to make those kind of requests cause it unlocks some of the resources that are there to assist some of the most affected communities.
