A first for Jozi - The launch of a Commercial Rooftop Farm

The top floor of The Chamber of Mines has been converted into a small-scale farm as part of an agricultural initiative headed by the WIBC (Wouldn't It Be Cool) Organisation.

The organisation focuses on mentoring young entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds who have inventive ideas that could potentially impact the future. Chief Idea Sherpa, Michael Magondo says WIBC is currently working with 380 business.

We started on this project about 18 months ago and it wasn't easy. We were looking at trying to create opportunities for young people within the inner city.

The concept of having farms in the sky came about as a result of the WIBC being approached by many entrepreneurs who wanted to be farmers but didn't have access to land.

This first for Johannesburg has received mass support from various divisions, like the Department of Small Businesses, which has come to the party by funding 100 small-scale urban farms.

The Johannesburg Inner City partnership really came behind and supported us in terms of coming aboard, incubating this, and then bringing around some of the key partners that we had for the project like Chamber of Mines who offered their rooftop.
