SAPS on Botha dismissal over Jiba, Samwu denies looting, kidnap experiment viral

Botha fired for having secret NPA meetings over Jiba

Heard on 702's John Robbie Show: dismissed senior detective in the investigation of Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nomgcobo Jiba, was fired for having secret meetings with NPA officials. Colonel Marthinus 'Boats' Botha - who is a retired detective contracted to the SAPS - has been relieved of his duties for allegedly misleading prosecutors to serve a summons on Jiba.SAPS National Spokersperson, Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale:

We had a contract with him. As you know, he has retired from the Police, so we decided to keep him on for two years. The contract was supposed to end on the 30th of June, but given his role that he played within the issuing of the summons, we decided that we should terminate his contract. What he did wrong is that he had this secret meeting with officials at the NPA whilst he did not have the docket with him and it was on that basis that the summons were issued. Colonel Botha who had retired from the police - was brought into the Oscar Pistorius case, because we were having problems with that case and he was brought in because of his experience in investigating murder. After the case ended, the National Police Commissioner (Riah Phiyega) set up this new investigations unit and he was then asked to act as the Commander of this unit at head office. So all the cases that were investigated at this unit would be lead by him and this was one of those cases.

De Lille to pursue court action over Samwu strike chaos

Image: EWN

Heard on Cape Talk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies: despite threats by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille to sue the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), the union has denied involvement in reported violent looting. Samwu's City of Cape Town workers took to the city's streets on Wednesday and descended into chaos when some protesters began looting informal traders' stalls and tipping over rubbish bins. De Lille has said that Samwu must take responsibility for the violence. Samwu Secretary, Michael Khumalo:

In terms of her response (De Lille's) on our demands, we are happy for now and will be following negotiation proceedings. (On reporting of violent looting during Samwu strike) I was personally there and I think there's a bit of exaggeration and I won't be able to agree with that. What I can confess to is that there was the throwing of refuse in the street, but in terms of taking of other peoples' things, there was no such. (On what the media said) it's difficult to say they are lying, because I heard from the marshals and we don't agree with that. There will be propaganda, this is political.
