Motorists could be coughing up R30 more in vehicle licence fees in 2018 and the Justice Project South Africa is not having it.

The Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) wants Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi to explain the 71% increase in vehicle licence fees for 2018.

A proposal in the Government Gazette could see a R30 increase in vehicle renewal fees as a part of the transaction fee to be paid to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

That means motorists could pay a total of R72, instead of the current R42.

JPSA chair Howard Dembovsky says the increase has not been justified by Maswanganyi.

The minister must forward some kind of rational explanation for this.

He adds that the RTMC has not achieved the mandate of enhancing road safety and reducing road carnage.

Dembovsky argues that the vehicle licence fees should decrease and not increase.
