Make Money Mondays

Hassen Adams (he brought Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts to SA) talks money

I realised from an early age I enjoy work… I’m still a workaholic…

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

My mother was the matriarch that looked after the money.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

I always wanted to be an architect. I ended up working as a draughtsman… I earned R60 a month, which wasn’t even enough for traveling… In one year they trebled my salary… That was my first job.

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays” feature.

This week Whitfield interviewed Grand Parade Investments (GPI) Chairperson Dr Hassen Adams.

Adams is, probably, most well known for bringing Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts to South Africa.

GPI was founded in 1997 to partner with Sun International as its primary black economic partner in the Western Cape.

It listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2008.

What does Adams believe about money?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I was born in District Six.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

Cape Town – especially its centre – is a very precious place to me.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

District Six was a place where everyone was family.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

My father was a barman; he came home late at night.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

Today is a consequence of yesterday and tomorrow is a consequence of today.

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

You hardly found beggars [in District Six]... it was an amazing place…

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

I have a philosophy of ‘naked in, naked out’…

Dr Hassen Adams, Grand Parade Investments

I used to be quite an active comrade in the ANC. I’m a bit troubled saying that, in terms of what’s happening in the country…
