'A perception that new SABC board head is very close to President Jacob Zuma'

President Jacob Zuma has announced the appointment the SABC board members, three weeks after the deadline.

Bongumusa Makhathini is now chairperson, while Febe Potgieter-Gqubule will serve as his deputy.

Kate Skinner, Member at SOS Support Public Broadcasting Campaign, says while this a strong group of members, there are questions over Makhatini and Potgieter-Gqubule's relationship to the President.

Both of those people, or at least the perception would be, that they are very close to President Jacob Zuma.

For instance the chair is the chairperson of the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation.

The deputy chair is also very close to Nkosazna Dlamini-Zuma, she worked very closely with her on the African Union. So I think you have to look at the loyalty issues, but also that they are a number of very good people.

The full SABC board:

Febe Potgieter-Gqubule

Krish Naidoo

Khanyisile Kweyama

John Matisonn

Mathatha Tsedu

Rachel Kalidass

Michael Markovitz

Bongumusa Makhathini

Victor Rambau

Dinkwanyane Mohuba

Jack Phalane

Zuma has reshuffled his cabinet once again, appointing Mmamoloko Kubayi to the communications portfolio.

Skinner says Kubayi has some background in communications but the move is very destabilising.

Ayanda Dlodlo was aware of all the different issues and the financial crisis in the SABC, I think things will move a lot more slowly, that is not necessarily a good thing.
