According to reports, a Krugersdorp NGO, Masego Home, where 7 Life Esidimeni patients died, remains open despite the Health Ombudsman recommending its closure. .
Director for Mental Health Directorate, Dr Kobie Marais says Masego is one of the NGOs that has been audited by the department and was found to be providing faithful patient care and is correctly licensed.
She says the NGO has been audited every quarter and is providing good care to the patients.
However, TimesLive has reported that on their visit to the NGO they found a mentally ill patient who looked underweight and very sick, his pants tied with a shoelace around his waist.
Having people that are underweight doesn't always mean the person is not treated very well, people can be sick... but having a shoelace to tie up his pants, I would be very worried about that.— Dr Kobie Marais, Director for Mental Health Directorate
