Zuma is paying it forward and stacking the deck in his favor - Brown

Political analyst Karima Brown says President Jacob Zuma's latest cabinet reshuffle may be an attempt to secure a win for his preferred presidential candidate.

There has been much speculation as to why the President made six major ministerial changes to his cabinet.

The reshuffle saw Blade Nzimande being axed as Higher Education Minister, while State Security Minister Mahlobo takes over the Energy Ministry, a move that is said to be an attempt to push through the nuclear deal with Russia before Zuma's term ends in 2019.

President Zuma did two things, I think he is in fact trying to take out insurance in case his anointed candidate does not come through in December in terms of patronage networks in the state, particularly on issues around the nuclear deal.

He is also paying it forward in terms of ensuring that he is able to stack the deck in his favor going to December, if you look at the appointment of the new state security minister, its a former insider from Mpumalanga, from Mr David Mabuza's offices, many people read it as an attempt by Mr Zuma to try and incite Mr Mabuza back to the NDZ crowd.
