Former Eskom CEO tells Parliament he was was told to meet with "some people"

Parliaments Portfolio committee into Public Enterprise is continuing its state capture probe, with Wednesday's focus on Eskom.

Former Eskom CEO Brian Dames was asked if he had met with the Gupta family, who are believed to be at the centre of state capture.

Dames told Parliament that he was asked by Minister Malusi Gigaba's advisor, Siyabonga Mahlangu to meet with "some people". This is according to EWN reporter Rahima Essop.

He said before going to the meeting he had no idea who he was going to meet. The meeting took place in Midrand and Dames assumes it was one of the Gupta brothers he had met with. The problem is he couldn't name which of the brothers he had met with.

Dames told Parliament that the people he met with said they were told to work with him. He says they mentioned the coal contracts with Eskom, a conversation that left him annoyed.

He said he went back to Mahlangu and told him that he wasn't happy with the situation.

We don't know why he hasn't spoken out before but we do know that he is speaking out now because he believes the inquiry is much needed.

Rahima Essop, EWN reporter

He commended MPs for inquiring about state capture but he says it should've been done much sooner.
