#MeToo sexual harassment campaign gains traction on social media

Responding to the mounting allegations of sexual assault against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, thousands of women of have shared their own stories.

The call to action by actress Alyssa Milano has been trending since Sunday.

Weinstein, who co-produced Oscar-winning films like The King’s Speech and The Artist, has been accused by multiple women of harassment and rape.

In an unprecedented move in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expelled Weinstein from the organisation.

Eyewitness News correspondent Nadia Neophytou says questions have been raised about the industry's response and whether the Academy will take any further action to address the plight of sex crimes on women.

Yesterday the academy said it cannot be an inquisitorial body but all it can do is provide support and encouragement to vulnerable people, women who have been targeted by their peers in the past.

It is now a case of well, is this going to be a sea of change in the industry, but that will be seen if the policies and if the actual environment of Hollywood itself does change.
