Mosego Home given thumbs up after 'audit' from Gauteng Mental Health Directorate

There has been shock and outrage at what happens after patients were transferred from the Life Esidimeni facilities.

A hundred and forty-one psychiatric patients died after the provincial health department in Gauteng terminated its contract with the group. Many months after the shock discovery some of the NGO's involved are still operating with patients.

Dr Kobie Marais, Director for Gauteng Mental Health Directorate inspected one of the facilities in the West Rand, Mosego Home and although it wasn't a full audit she was comfortable with what she found.

We specifically focused on whether the patient's nutritional status were fine, if the patients received balanced meals throughout the day and if they were clothed well.

Dr Kobie Marais, Director for Gauteng Mental Health Directorate

One of the symptoms of a psychiatric illness is that patients find it hard to take care of themselves and their surroundings explains Marais.

She says sometimes patients will get into conflict with their caregivers.

Seven patients died at the Mosego Home. Marais says they have since reduced the number of patients the facility can manage and since their visit there on Tuesday, she give the place a thumbs up.
