[LISTEN] Bongani Bongo on Day 2 as State Security Minister

State Security Minister Bongani Bongo says he will provide the required leadership in his portfolio, as is required by the law.

Bongo was sworn in as minister by Judge President of the Western Cape High Court John Hlophe at Tuynhuys on Wednesday.

A Member of Parliament since 2014, Bongo has been a member of Portfolio Committees on Justice and Correctional Services; and of Defence and Military Veterans.

He has also sat in ad hoc committees into political party funding, and on the appointment of the current Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane. Bongo is also an admitted attorney.

Asked what the role of the state security agency should be, Bongo said domestic stability is one priority.

The role of the security agency should be to promote national security, domestic stability and make sure we attend to issues of terrorism and extremism, and attend to cyber related issues.

What is expected of us as politicians is to give policy guidance to the department and do oversight in terms of what has been the resolution of the ruling party and the resolution of government in terms of the NDP.
