Blessee's taste of the 'champagne lifestyle' told in new book

Author Angela Makholwa has written her fourth novel, The Blessed Girl, which illuminates the realities of the so-called 'blesser phenomenon' in South Africa.

'Blesser' is the buzzword used to describe an older, wealthy person (often a married man) who provides material and financial support to his sexual partners.

'Blessees' or the 'blessed' are the recipients of the gifts and expensive luxuries during courtship with 'blessers'.

The Blessed Girl follows the lavish life of Bontle Tau, a woman accustomed to the finer things in life and the financial support of multiple men.

The story looks at the dynamics of her relationships within 'blessers' from her perspective and is written in the first-person, Makholwa explains.

I speak in the voice of 'blessee' throughout the book.

The author says she spoke with a number of 'blessees' that she knew personally and some that she connected with through online 'blesser' match-making sites.

Most of the 'blessers' are actually married. That was the extent of my research.

Angela Makholwa, author

The book centres around Bontle's relations with her three main blessers: renowned businessmen 'Papa Jeff', government bigshot 'Teddy' and Nigerian oil magnate 'Mister Emmanuel'.
