Are you eating good fish or bad fish?
Do you really know what you are eating when it comes to seafood?
In 2011 Stellenbosch scientist Dr Donna Cawthorn used various DNA-based methods to evaluate the extent of South African seafood mislabeling. Her work revealed widespread fish species substitution and fraud.

SASSI has coded fish by how sustainable they are. Those classified as green can be consumed with a clear conscious as they are sustainable. Seafood classified as orange should only be occasionally eaten. Seafood coded as red are completely unsustainable and you should actually contact the police if you come across these types of seafood.
SASSI offers an app (www.sassiapp.co.za) and a query service for those facing an unfamiliar fish. Simply type the name of the fish and send it to 079 499 8795 to receive information.
