South Africans Doing Great Things | Mthabisi Ncube

What do you think of when someone says the word pharmaceutical? Do you think of medicine and collecting prescriptions? Or do you think of a booming industry that could benefit millions?

Wasanga Mehana who is standing in for Gugu Mhlungu speaks to Mthabisi Ncube, a Pharmacy Manager at Khayelitsha Day Hospital & Business Relations Director at AugmentSA. Mthabisi is currently working with the Department of Tourism and the Department of Health on a bid to Host the FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) international conference which is estimated to have an economic injection of R50M to the Cape Town economy in 2021.

Mthabisi Ncube is part of a leadership development program and has his Honors in Pharmacy from Rhodes and his Masters in Business Administration.

When you're talking pharmaceuticals and healthcare. For a healthy healthcare system you need a strong pharmaceutical background.

Mthabisi Ncube, Pharmacy Manager at Khayelitsha Day Hospital and Business Relations Director at AugmentSA

Mthabisi highlights that there is a massive gap when it comes to healthcare services and provisions. Access to medicine is a very important aspect in achieving a good healthcare outcome and the pharmaceutical industry is essentially the backbone to an efficient healthcare system.

If you look at where we source a lot of our pharmaceutical products, it's still the best in foreign markets. We're really reliant on what happens in foreign markets and the global trend.

Mthabisi Ncube, Pharmacy Manager at Khayelitsha Day Hospital and Business Relations Director at AugmentSA

Mthabisi states that South Africa would be better if products were localized which is essentially what AugmentSA is trying to achieve. AugmentSA pharmaceutical consultancy is basically involved in the registration of medicine in the South African market.

What we do is that we bring in different brands to compete with your original drug.

Mthabisi Ncube, Pharmacy Manager at Khayelitsha Day Hospital and Business Relations Director at AugmentSA

The Business Relations Director at AugmentSA goes on to state that this improves accessibility to medicine because it creates a cheaper alternative.
