Expert says Van Breda could have passed out on night of attack

A new witness for the defence began his testimony in the Henri Van Breda Trial on Monday.

Van Breda, aged 22, is accused of axing to death his father Martin, his mother Theresa and his older brother Rudi to death at their home outside Stellenbosch in January 2015.

Durban neurosurgeon Mike du Trevou was questioned on whether accussed Van Breda's claim that he passed out for 2 hours 45 minuters after the attack on his family is feasible.

EWN reporter, Monique Mortlock says that prosecution's questioning mainly dealt with Van Breda's claim of passing out and partially forgetting what occurred.

According to Mortlock, du Trevou says there are two possibilities that could support Van Breda's claims. The most likely is that Van Breda experienced a fainting attack that could have been triggered by numerous things, including stress or the sight of blood.

Du Trevou said it is completely normal to lose consciousness for that period of time and then recover on their own with no signs of head injury.
