On Monday the Press attaché of the Russian Embassy responded to claims that Putin had a hand in the latest Cabinet reshuffle.

The Press attaché of the Russian Embassy in South Africa, Alexander Kulyaev has criticised the Sunday Times for failing to verify claims President Vladimir Putin had a hand in the latest South African Cabinet reshuffle.

READ: 'I don't know why Russia's bothered to deny their involvement, Zuma didn't'

The paper reported that a delegation from Russia sent by Putin gave a final warning to the South African authorities, to speed up and conclude a multibillion-dollar nuclear deal with the Russians.

READ: Are the Russians and nuke deal linked to the Cabinet reshuffle?

Speaking to Koketso Sachane on Monday night, Kulyaev described the story as fake news and expressed the embassy's disappointment at the paper.

Nobody bothered to ask us to verify, deny otherwise at any point. So we are very disappointed at the level of journalism that was demonstrated by the Sunday Times.

Asked whether they will be taking action against the paper, Kulyaev said a statement will suffice.

Whether any action will be taken in the future, we will see.

We do see some of this anti-Russian narrative in some of the South African media outlets, they usually use the same framework on unsubstantiated allegations, we do expect a higher quality of journalism from the South African media.
