Institute for Security Studies' Gareth Newham explains why the latest crime stats are not good.

Today Police Minister Fikile Mbalula announced the latest crime stats. Gareth Newham, Head of Justice and Violence Prevention at Institute for Security Studies says that they consider the crime stats as very bad news.

Newham says the two most important categories to look at when looking at trends in crime is the murder category and aggravated robberies. This is because these crimes are reported reliably and give an indication on whether police are using their resources properly.

According to Newham, the stats on the other violent crimes are unreliable.

The other violent crime categories like sexual offences and assaults are very unreliable. Most people who fall victim to these crimes do not report them to the police.

Gareth Newham, Head of Justice and Violence Prevention at Institute for Security Studies

Newham says that surveys show that people do not report these crimes because they do not have faith in the police. So when these stats go down, it is not necessarily because they crimes are decreasing.

They are not a measure of the crime going down, they are a measure of people's faith and trust in the police declining, and therefore not reporting. So we don't see anything positive about these crime statistics released today.

Gareth Newham, Head of Justice and Violence Prevention at Institute for Security Studies
