AfriForum condemns use of old SA flags on #BlackMonday

Farming communities around the country have been protesting against farm killing on Monday, barricading some of the highways in big cities with bakkies.

A movement called Black Monday is said to be behind the rallying of the Monday march following the murder of a farm owner in the Western Cape, Joubert Conradie.

Head of Community Safety at AfriForum, Ian Cameron says the police haven't really done anything to contain the situation.

Cameron condemned the use of the old apartheid South African flag during the demonstrations.

Police on ground level - I think there's a general problem with competency - but there are also a lot of police officers who are trying but don't have resources and manpower.

Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum

He says people ask him why they are only focusing on farm attacks?

Just take the emotional side out of it, if we don't have farmers, we don't have food. We already have so many people who can't eat on a daily basis.

Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum

Since we introduced Black Monday last week we haven't seen one more farm murder in the country which is strange and we must ask why... Who are these people committing these attacks?

Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum

Cameron condemned people who came out to the march with old South African flag saying those actions were unnecessary.

I just feel it is unnecessary for people to jump back to certain political ideologies. We need to fix this problem at hand regardless of what your political affiliation is. This is something that's going to have a major impact on the country.

Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum

Dr Johan Burger, independent crime and policing consultant, says the alternatives to fixing these problems are limited to community action.

He says because of these attacks farmers are worried about protecting themselves instead of producing food.

We are now asking them to find ways of protecting themselves, to do the work that government should be leading on.

Dr Johan Burger, Independent Crime and Policing Consultant
