LISTEN: Stephen Grootes on the use of the old Apartheid flag

Thousands of farmers and supporters participated in the national Black Monday campaign on Monday aimed at raising awareness around the number of attacks and killings involving farmers.

There has been criticism from members of the public after images of supporters brandishing the old South African flag were circulated on social media as well as the disregard for the lives of black people.

702 radio show host Stephen Grootes questions the intent of the protest action and speaks of the underlying issues of white privilege and racism displayed.

To begin to address racism, Grootes says South Africans need to start by raising children in a more diverse environment.

There are communities where children are growing up only with people who look and speak like them, we shouldn't be surprised then that these children grow up believing that some people are more important than others.

Stephen Grootes, 702 anchor

These are the same children who cannot understand why a protest they claim is about farm murders is then condemned rightly for being racist.

Stephen Grootes, 702 anchor

The starting point has to be that our children grow up with children who look and speak differently to them.
