No evidence that Makwakwa and Elskie are guilty of any crime - Yunus Carrim

After months of being placed on Special Leave the second in command at South African Revenue Service Jonas Makwakwa has been reinstated after being cleared of all charges relating to R1,3m in suspicious deposits into his personal accounts.

In 2016, a Financial Intelligence Centre report said that Makwakwa and his partner Kelly-Anne Elskie, also a Sars employee, "may have been involved in or facilitating corrupt activities."

The report noted 75 unusual and suspicious cash deposits into his accounts between 2010 and 2016 and indicated that credits into the same accounts increased yearly by 152 percent in the same period.

Yunus Carrim, Chairman of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance says their committee has no evidence that Makwakwa and Elskie are guilty of any crime adding that they are not forensic investigators.

We take it that they have been acquitted on the basis of a thorough and full investigation.

What we have repeatedly told the minister of finance as well Pravin Gordhan and the Sars Commissioner that we would like a copy of that report tabled before our committee irrespective of the outcome.

We understand that there may be some sensitive issues, in which case the lawyers of the South African Revenue Services and lawyers in Parliament can discuss blocking those sensitive issues out but for the rest, the report should be made available argues Carrim.

Our view has consistently been that this a senior official of Sars and the revenue services is meant to be above board.
