Veli Ngubane, CEO of AVATAR ad agency, has a history of selling bright ideas

Entrepreneur Veli Ngubane is the CEO of AVATAR, South Africa's biggest black-owned integrated marketing agency.

AVATAR is a full-service marketing agency with a strong digital focus and emphasis on diversity, Ngubane explains.

The agency employs a team of more than 70 marketers across Cape Town and Joburg, including creatives, developers, writers, strategists, account managers, producers and many others.

AVATAR helps their clients build great brands and engaging customer experiences.

The business started with R2000 start up capital and has expanded to work with blue chip companies.

The five-year old agency has a turnover of more than R60 million a year.

Ngubane was born in rural KwaZulu-Natal, eManguzi, and later moved to Empangeni where I lived until moving to boarding school in Durban.

He later went to UCT where he completed a Bachelor of Social Science in before obtaining a Post Graduate Marketing & Advertising Diploma from Red & Yellow.

Ngubane says his business instinct was always alive, even as a student he found opportunities to make money through events.

He explains that every unsuccessful business ventures and business decision has taught him a lesson.

Ngubane and his business partner Zibusiso Mkhwanazi founded AVATAR after seeing a gap for a black-owned integrated agency in 2012.

Everyone is born an entrepreneur, but they need certain things to happen before the entrepreneurship is activated. It lies dormant until then.

I've always seen opportunity since a very young age. It's because I grew up in two economies; I lived in Ngwelezane township but I went to so-called 'model C' schools in town.
