Can homeopathic products cure disease?

The newly appointed chairperson of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sapra) has cautioned against claims that homeopathic products Aloe Vera can help cure cancer.

On Tuesday, the 702 Breakfast Show shared a Facebook post from someone who claims that their sister was cured from cancer by using Forever New products.

Sapra is taking over from the Medicines Control Council and will regulate homeopathic products.

Chairperson, Helen Rees spoke to Stephen Grootes on what this regulatory authority will do to regulate homeopathic products.

I think that one has to be very careful when you hear claims like this because things like treating cancer usually fall under the role of orthodox medicines. Unless we can see that there is evidence that the drug actually works, we won't register it or license it for that purpose.

She says while they are trying to tighten up regulations, they also recognise that there are alternative disciplines that many people believe in.

One of the things that the regulator is now looking at is the quality of the manufacturing.
