Gender violence in the Spotlight

If Jordaan is innocent, why's he scared to field questions? - Eusebius McKaiser

South African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan has yet to break the silence on rape allegations lodged against him, with his lawyer confirming that he will release a statement denying the claims.

Last month, artist and former ANC MP Jennifer Ferguson revealed that she was raped more than twenty years ago, allegedly, at the hands of the Safa president.

Two more women have since come forward.

On Tuesday, Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi, Jordaan's legal representative called into The Karima Brown Show. She said the decision to respond to Ferguson's claims was made after she and Jordaan listened to all the debates surrounding the matter on 702.

Commenting on the matter, Eusebius McKaiser says while Mulaudzi welcomes any criminal charges laid against her client, the legal hurdles that women and girls have to face remain the biggest challenge.

When someone says I actually want *Neo to go and lay a charge against me if she is so brave, it does not mean I am innocent. It might mean that I am profoundly aware that given the evidentiary burden... the statistical probability of me being found guilty beyond reasonable doubt is very low.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk show host

McKaiser asks why Jordaan is afraid of facing the media.

If this man is innocent, why are you scared to field questions? A press statement that is written is not the same thing as answering questions in real time when journalists are posing that to you and if you are innocent you are not going to trip over yourself.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702/CapeTalk show host

Again a terse statement from Jordaan simply denying the charges also doesn't cut it. We need to get a sense of what would make women who have more to lose than to gain wake up and accuse you of being a sexual predator?
