Thelle Mogoerane Hospital described as "deplorable", TAC demands seat on board

The situation at Thelle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus is being described as simply deplorable. There are reports of sewage spillage from the kitchen, dead bodies, injured people sleeping on the floor and dozens of unfilled staff vacancies.

Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) secretary general, Anele Yawa says there are about 150 TAC members and other trade unions at the hospital to meet with the CEO.

There are issues of mismanagement, lack of leadership, as well as the rights of health workers being violated, he says.

We want a turn around strategy as to how are they going to solve the problem at Thelle Mogoerane. Secondly, we are demanding that TAC people must be given permission to work inside the facility and thirdly, we are demanding that TAC must have representatives on the board because we don't know who these board members are...

Anele Yawa, National General Secretary for the Treatment Action Campaign

If we have representatives inside the board we are able to ascertain whether these failures in the health system are reported and discussed at the board level.

As TAC we are resolute, we are determined and we are not turning back until we get the answers.

Gauteng DDG for Clinical Services, Dr Richard Lebethe has rubbished claims by TAC saying that the hospital is fully functional.

He says he is being in the hospital this whole week, the facility is clean and not dirty as reports says, the ratio of patients to nurses is sufficient.

He says there was an incident where the unions were taking out nurses from wards leaving just one nurse to take care of 11 patients in ICU and the labour ward closed.
