NUM threatens to strike over wage dispute

The National Union of Mineworkers says the Chamber of Mines has until Wednesday to accept it's wage demands, saying it's members are prepared to go on strike if it continues to negotiate in bad faith.

The union says that coal workers will not accept a three-year wage deal. They are demanding a once-off payment for this year and an 8% wage increase for next year.

Ray White spoke to NUM spokesperson , Livhuwani Mamburu.

We will only accept the multi-year agreement which is three years, if the chamber agree to continue negotiating on the cenrtalised bargaining forum.

Our members are saying they can't allow companies to negotiate at a company level.

Mamburu says they are still having difficulties convincing the companies.

He says coal production will come to a standstill if the matter is not resolved.

Meanwhile, Sibanye-Stillwater confirmed on Wednesday that it had laid off more than 2000 gold miners.

Mmaburu says a mass meeting was held. He insists Sibanye is not interested in job creation in South Africa.

They are pumping millions in that operation in the US, locally they are just destroying jobs and they are arrogant.
