Breaking News: Danny Jordaan denies rape allegations

South African Football Association (Safa) boss Danny Jordaan has now released a formal statement denying rape allegations made by artist and former African National Congress Member of Parliament Jennifer Ferguson.

On Wednesday, Jordaan's legal team stated that Ferguson's claims that he raped her in Port Elizabeth in 1997 are untrue.

Last month Ferguson posted a Facebook blog post in which she made the allegation following a campaign, which encouraged women and men to speak out against sexual assault.

Jordaan has been silent since her claims were first made and this is the first public statement he has made.

In the statement, Jordaan says the time taken to respond has been due to his need to be sensitive 'in the light of the scourge of gender-based violence in this country.'

His lawyers have advised him not to participate in a public debate surrounding the rape allegations.
