Gender violence in the Spotlight

If Jordaan is innocent as he claims, he must sue for defamation - Bongani Bingwa

In October, musician and former African National Congress (ANC) Jennifer Ferguson said she was raped by the president of the South African Football Association (Safa), Danny Jordaan about twenty years ago.

Now Jordaan has broken his silence, after releasing a statement through his attorney, Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi who wrote: “While Dr Jordaan supports public debate as an essential tool to highlight the issue of gender-based violence, however, in this case, there are two opposing versions that cannot be resolved in the media or elsewhere in substitution to a court of law.”

On Wednesday morning, on the Eusebius McKaiser show, Ferguson brought forward claims that there had been attempts by advocate Norman Arendse who has affiliations with Jordaan to discredit and slut shame her.

During the same interview, earlier the Eusebius McKaiser show, Arendse denied claims that he had tried to dig up dirt on her adding that he had never met Ferguson.

Norman said: I admire her and all the other women who have come out as far as the campaign to expose sexual predators. It's something that is overdue.

Last night on the Karima Brown show, allegations were made that two other women have accused Jordaan of sexual inapproriate behaviour.

Bingwa says men are often labeled derogatory terms such as 'gay' if they cannot attain a number of sexual conquests. He goes on to say the real issue here is that once again, women are being made to apologise and eo explain having sex.

If there was ever going to be a denial, surely it should have been immediate says Bingwa.

If you are as sensitive to this as you claim to be, sue, it is the only way.

Ferguson's ex partner and father of her son also called into the Eusebius McKaiser show on Wednesday, saying he stood by Ferguson and that she is a champion of the truth and has no motives to discredit Jordaan and is only seeking justice.
