D-Day for Sassa Post Office deal

The chairperson for the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) sent Minister for Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, and the SA Post Office went back to the negotiation table on Tuesday.

This follows Tuesday's revelations that the two entities had still not reached an agreement on South African Post Office (Sapo) being the service provider to disburse social grants. Sapo CEO, Mark Barnes, said there is a misconception on whether Sapo has the capacity to administer the grants.

Freedom Under Law CEO, Nicole Fritz, tells 702 Afternoon Drive host Bongani Bingwa that they are tremendously concerned that the whole process is not being undertaken in good faith.

The ConCourt put in place a fairly extraordinary mechanism, an expert panel to oversee the transition to a new social grant payment system and ensure it was seamless.

What we've seen is a report issued from that expert panel in September which was scathing in its assessment of what has been happening at SASSA, the conduct of the minister.

What they seem to be doing is systematically withholding information from the expert panel so that it is unable to perform its role to oversee what is happening.

Fritz says the minister and South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) are doing everything in their power to avoid the scrutiny and oversight that would have to happen to ensure a proper transition to a proper grant payment system.

Fritz goes on to say millions depend on the grant and it would be a pity to have the courts intervene once again and issue direction to Dlamini and Sassa.
