Leader of the DA Mmusi Maimane condemned the use of the old South African flag in a public gathering saying it is offensive.

Leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, condemned the use of the old South African flag by some farmers who were protesting against farm murders on Monday.

Maimane says displaying the of the old flag represents scars and pains many South Africans went through during Apartheid and it is therefore offensive.

South African's who came and possessed those flags brought out a very painful history for South Africans.

Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the DA

Secondly, whilst they may hold the right to have that opinion, I think it constitutes a form of hate speech because it was offensive.

Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the DA

Maimane says he doesn't have a problem with the flag being displayed in Parliament because it is part of our history but people should be conscious not to bring out in public gatherings because it doesn't help in social cohesion.

It doesn't engender the sense of reconciliation. We as South Africans regardless of race and background we represent the new South Africa and all of us ought to be part of it.

Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the DA

This is not a question of race or colour but a question of let us build a reconciled South Africa... lets stand all together behind the new flag and face the challenges we currently facing.

Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the DA
