SABC employees on nationwide strike demanding 10% wage increase

The South African Broadcasting Corporation SABC and the Broadcast, Electronic Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) are still at loggerheads regarding pay increments.

Bemawu workers are demanding a 10% salary increase from the cash-strapped SABC.

Mark Heywood, Executive Director at Section27, says picketing outside the SABC premises started at 06:00 and grew to include journalists and technicians.

The protest has received a lot of public support, says Heywood.

I was there to show support to SABC journalists, to say to them that 0% wage increase is ludicrous ...especially for the fact that we know that if the SABC is bankrupt is because is looted and the journalists have been at the forefront to stop the looting.

Mark Heywood, Executive Director at Section27

They were very few people at work at the SABC. I was told the strike has spread to other SABC offices in Cape Town, Polokwane and in Durban - this is the first day.

Mark Heywood, Executive Director at Section27

Heywood says the journalists feel that they've been run down for a very long time by bad management, leadership, and political interventions.

He urged members of the public to go out and support the SABC employees.
