Soweto marathon still Mzansi's favorite after two decades

Chairperson of the Soweto Marathon Trust, Sello Khunou says the preparations for the marathon are in order and runners are coming in to collect their race packs at the FNB stadium.

Khunou urged all registered runners to collect their material as there will be no provisions made for those who haven't collected on Sunday.

Because of the hot weather we have stocked up enough water and ice for the athletes.

Khunou says about 26 000 athletes will be taking part in the 24th Old Mutual Soweto Marathon which started in 1991.

The marathon started with only 80 runners and grew to cater for thousands.

The athletes will be taking part in different races - 42.2 km, 22 km and 10 Km.

It's been quite an achievement since we started.

Sello Khunou, Chairperson of the Soweto Marathon Trust

The people love the Soweto Marathon simply because it is in the township. The community comes out in numbers to support the runners... lots of braais, old mamas relieving runners of their cramps...

We are also receiving ministers from neighbouring countries in Africa who are coming to witness the marathon.
