Profile Interview | Nambitha Mpumlwana

A women who wears many hats.

A force in the acting world.

An inspiration whose talent has touched many people in South Africa.

We are talking of non other than renowned international actress Nambitha Mpumlwana.

Although known in the film industry as Nambitha, she has played numerous lead roles on the small screen over the years: Award winning Yizo Yizo I & II, 7de Laan, Interrogation Room I & II, Justice for All I & II and Saints, Sinners & Settlers.

She also appeared in The Lab I & II as Pearl Luzipho, a role that earned her the Best Actress in a drama series at the second annual SAFTAs (2007). She recently played a lead role in Mozart - Music of the Violin on MNet.

When she's not turning heads in the film space, Nambitha is presenting the Diva Nexus. A women empowerment programme she runs.

One of the reasons it’s called the Diva Nexus is because people think that representing yourself in a situation is a diva antique, and they use that term in a negative way, but nobody knows where to scratch you because you’re the only one that knows where you itch and how much you itch.

Nambitha says that as women we are socialized and encouraged to give away our power without being requested to do so. If you don’t give away that power then it becomes a problem says the actress.

Nambitha has acted alongside celebrated international actors such as Morgan Freeman in Invictus (2009) and appeared opposite Angelina Jolie in Beyond Borders (2003). She was right there with Hillary Swank in the BAFTA nominated and award winning Red Dust (2004) and when Tsotsi (2005) won an Oscar Award, Nambitha was counted amongst one of the best South African artists that added depth.

Aubrey mentions that Morgan Freeman cannot stop talking about the dance they shared on Invictus. She talks about the learning curve she experienced in the movie and jokingly says:

I was only the tiniest of parts in it however the twins came out to play.

One of the things Angelina Jolie taught me was to acknowledge the different moments because you never know when they may come around again says the renowned international actress.

Mawanda was a fictional character Nambitha played on Generations. The actress mentions that she has had some strange and hilarious encounters with people who refer to her as Mawanda.

One of my favorite jokes was that people who watched me on Ashes to Ashes would say, Oh Mawande I loved you on ashes.
