Is Minister Fikile Mbalula moving to seize control of Crime Intelligence Unit?

Eyewitness News revealed on Monday how Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has effectively assumed command and control of the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit.

According to meeting minutes and confidential information notes seen by EWN, the unit’s acting commander Bhoyi Ngcobo has ignored Acting National Police Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba and instead taken directive from Mbalula.

Records show Mbalula ordered several promotions of generals be rescinded, as well as another general’s transfer out of the unit, receives weekly intelligence briefings and has been added to the police’s daily intelligence briefing mailing list.

What we have managed to establish now I have had sight of meeting minutes as well as information notes, correspondence between the minister, the acting national commissioner and the divisional commissioner of crime intelligence, shows that the crime intelligence unit is now effectively reporting directly to the police minister.

This undermines the chain of command whereas you would normally have the divisional commissioner who would report to the deputy national commissioner who reports to the national commissioner who then reports to the police commissioner.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

In terms of the law the police minster provides largely an oversight or policy directive role but this has changed where it has become a direct command where he is issuing orders to the divisional commissioner which are being acted upon. Lesitja Mothiba essentially removed from the equation.

The police ministry has denied reports and apparently warned EWN about possible criminal prosecution.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes on the Breakfast Show, spokesperson, Vuyo Mhaga said there is not a shred of evidence to prove Mbalula's interference.

One of his messages was that police remain professional and get out of politics... it is extremely contradicting, there is no shred of evidence that he has actually done that.
