EWN Exposé: Mbalula is trying to seize control of Crime Intelligence

Eyewitness News senior reporter Barry Bateman revealed on Monday that Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has effectively assumed command and control of the Crime Intelligence Unit, sidelining acting National Police Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba.

Bateman says rigorous investigations and meeting correspondence has revealed that Mbalula is giving directions directly to Crime Intelligence, such as instructing divisional commissioner Bhoyi Ngcobo to promote two officers to generals without providing any reason.

This has revealed that the minister receives one-on-one direct intelligence briefing from the divisional commissioner and he is also been added to the daily intelligence mailing list that he is kept up to date every single day.

The concern that is raised about this is that it undermines the chain of command that should be going on within the Saps from the divisional commissioner to the national commissioner who then briefs the minister of police.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

The national commissioner has been taken out of the picture and you have the political head of the police speaking directly to the strategic unit, Crime Intelligence.

Upon speaking to experts, Bateman says the Constitution of South Africa is quiet when it comes to this issue but it is certainly concerning to have a political head that is interfering with the day to day operations of the Crime Intelligence.

Bateman says the Police Ministry has denied that Mbalula is issuing instructions to divisional commissioner of Crime Intelligence despite the correspondence showing the contrary.
