We don't need nuclear and we can't afford it - energy expert

Energy Minister David Mahlobo is allegedly fast-tracking the government’s controversial nuclear deal‚ which is expected to cost in the region of R1-trillion. This is according to reports by the City Press.

According to this report, the plan to determine what energy mix South Africa needs was expected to be finalised in February 2018‚ but will now be finished within the next two weeks.

Prof Anton Eberhard, Professor at UCT Graduate School of Business says those trying to push this nuclear deal might not succeed.

They are trying to produce a new plan with nuclear in it, which they will have to justify very carefully and it will certainly be scrutinised.

Prof Anton Eberhard, Professor at UCT Graduate School of Business

WIll the nuclear component be pushed through?

They will certainly try, but I think it is going to be very difficult for them to succeed. We don't need it. Our electricity demand is lower today that it was ten years ago. We can't afford and we can't finance it.

Prof Anton Eberhard, Professor at UCT Graduate School of Business

Clearly, there is no rationality to it. The onus is going to be on Zuma and Mahlobo to show that there are no corrupt motives in what they are doing.
