Tshediso Matona says former Eskom board wanted him out

During the Eskom parliamentary inquiry, on Tuesday, former CEO at the power utility, Tshediso Matona described a 'sordid and almost dysfunctional environment' among Eskom's board members.

He attributed this to fights over procurement issues dating back to the load-shedding period in October 2014.

Rahima Essop, EWN reporter was in Parliament. She reports that Matona had big issues to deal with during his tenure such as financial issues, load shedding, lack of maintenance on power plants as well as experiencing turbulent climates within the board largely owing to infighting over procurement matters.

Remember we heard from Brian Dames, another Eskom former CEO, who pointed out that the Eskom board led by Zola Tsotsi was intimately involved in procurement matters.

Essop reports that African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament, Mondli Gungubele asked Matona if he had raised any alarm bells during his five-month tenure.

Matona responded by saying he did try to raise these issues but wasn't closely involved with the particular contract that happened to occur during his tenure on the procurement of sub-quality coal from a Gupta company.

Matona, who was appointed in 2014 was suspended five months later. His suspension came as a complete shock. He was appointed in October and suspended in March. And during his time at Eskom, the board led by Tsotsi was flipped and six of the eight appointments were reportedly linked to the Gupta family.

Rahima Essop, EWN reporter

Essop says it was not clear why Matona was sanctioned and it was later revealed that his suspension had to do with him 'not doing certain things'.

He soon realised that the board did not want him to return says Essop.
